Seamless vs sectional eavestrough: which should you choose?

Published 8 min read

The short answer

Seamless eavestrough is formed in one piece to the length of each wall, so the only joints are at corners, end caps and downspouts. Sectional comes in short lengths joined end to end, and every joint is a place it can leak. For most London homes, seamless eavestrough is the better buy. Sectional suits sheds, short runs and DIY.

What is the actual difference between seamless and sectional eavestrough?

It comes down to how the run is made. Sectional eavestrough is sold in fixed lengths, usually from a home improvement store, and joined together on the house with connectors. Seamless eavestrough is formed by a machine from a coil of metal, cut to the exact length of each wall, and goes up as one piece.

That is the whole difference in the trough itself. A long wall gets one seamless run, or several sectional pieces with a joint between each. Corners, end caps and downspout outlets exist on both, so seamless does not mean no joints at all. It means no joints along the straight runs, which is where most of the length of your eavestrough is.

Because a seamless run is as long as the wall, it cannot be bought off a shelf. It has to be formed for your house. We bring our machine to the job and form each run on site, so there is no waiting on pieces to arrive.

We should say up front: we install seamless, so weigh what follows knowing that. We have tried to be fair about where sectional is the sensible choice, and there are real cases.

Why do the joints matter so much?

Because the joint is the weak point of any eavestrough. A straight run of metal does not leak. A joint is held watertight by sealant or a rubber gasket, and both age. Once one lets go, water drips at that spot every time it rains, usually onto the same patch of siding, window sill or foundation.

London’s winters make this worse. Water sits in the trough, freezes, thaws and freezes again, and ice adds weight that pulls on every joint and hanger. Metal and vinyl both expand in summer heat and shrink in the cold, and a sectional run moves at every joint as it does. Over enough seasons, the joints are where the drips and rust streaks show up first.

That is also how you spot it on your own house. If you have sectional eavestrough, look for staining, rust or drips at the seams on a rainy day. Leaks at one seam are a repair. Leaks at seams all along the run usually mean the eavestrough is near the end of its life, and our guide on whether to repair or replace your eavestrough walks through the rest of that check.

Where is sectional eavestrough a perfectly good choice?

On small, simple jobs where you are doing it yourself. A shed, a detached garage or a short run over a back step can take a few sectional pieces with only a joint or two. Fewer joints means fewer places to fail, and the gap between sectional and seamless shrinks with it.

Sectional also makes sense if you want to do the work yourself and are comfortable on a ladder. The materials are easy to buy, carry and cut, and you need no special equipment. Seamless is not a realistic DIY job, because it needs a forming machine.

If that is you, three things matter more than the brand on the box. Keep joints as few as you can by using the longest pieces you can handle. Give the run a steady slope toward the downspout so water never sits at a seam. And check the joints every spring and fall, because resealing one early is far easier than replacing the board behind it later.

Where sectional stops making sense is a whole house, a second storey, or long runs. Every extra length adds a joint, and every second-storey joint is one you will not want to climb up to reseal.

Is seamless eavestrough leak-proof?

No, and anyone who tells you it is has oversold it. Seamless removes the joints along the run. The corners, end caps and downspout outlets are still joints, and they still have to be done well.

That is why the corners matter so much on a seamless job. We mitre every corner by hand so it lines up with the run on both sides. One customer summed it up in two words in his Google review: “Perfect corners” (Bob F.).

The other things that make eavestrough work have nothing to do with seams. The run needs a steady slope to the downspout, or water sits in it. It needs enough downspouts, emptying away from the foundation. And it needs solid board behind it to hang on. Seamless eavestrough hung flat, or hung on rotted fascia, will overflow and drip like any other. If you are not sure about the board on your house, here is how to tell if your fascia is rotting.

What should you ask before you choose an installer?

Ask the questions that tell you how the job will be done, not just what it costs.

  • Is it seamless, and is it formed on site? Ask whether each run will be one piece to the length of your wall.
  • What size will you use, and why? We install 5-inch seamless eavestrough as standard, and 6-inch where a large or steep roof, or a run carrying water off a roof valley, needs the extra capacity. We look at the roof when we quote and tell you which your home needs.
  • How are the corners made? Ask whether they are mitred by hand or bought as pre-made pieces.
  • What happens to the board behind it? Ask what they do if the fascia is soft or rotted when the old eavestrough comes down. Replacing eavestrough on a rotting board only moves the problem. Our soffit and fascia page explains why.
  • What does the warranty cover, and whose is it? This one is worth slowing down on.

On that last point, here is our answer. We make our seamless eavestrough ourselves, so there is no manufacturer’s warranty on it. Our 10-year workmanship warranty is the cover, and it applies to every new install and replacement we do. A repair to eavestrough someone else installed is not covered.

Can you mix seamless and sectional, or repair one with the other?

You can, but think about why. Swapping a damaged piece of sectional eavestrough for a matching sectional piece is a normal repair, and so is replacing one damaged section of a seamless run. When we do that, we match it to the rest of your eavestrough.

Where mixing stops making sense is when most of the old run is failing. Patching one section of a run that leaks or sags in several places just moves you to the next repair, and a full seamless replacement is usually the better spend.

Common questions

Is seamless eavestrough worth the extra cost?

For a whole house, usually yes. Next to sectional you put up yourself, a seamless install costs more, and what you are paying for is the joints that are not there along the run and the climbs you will not make to reseal them. For a shed or a short single-storey run, sectional is often the sensible choice.

Can I install seamless eavestrough myself?

Not really. Seamless is formed by a machine to the length of each wall, so it is installed by a crew that owns one. If you want to do the work yourself, sectional is the realistic option.

How long does a seamless eavestrough install take?

Most homes are done in a single day, because we form the eavestrough on site and are not waiting on parts. One customer put it plainly: “the work was completed in one day, the job site was cleaned up well at the end of the day, and most importantly, the eavestroughs are functioning perfectly now” (Katrina M.). If your soffit or fascia needs replacing too, the job can take a few days to a week, depending on material lead times.

Can seamless eavestrough match my house?

Yes. It comes in over 15 colours, so you can match your roof, trim or siding. You can see finished jobs on homes around London in our gallery.

Can you tell me which my house needs?

Yes. We will come out, look at the roof and the board behind the eavestrough, and tell you honestly whether yours needs a repair or new eavestrough. The quote is free. Ask for one through our contact page, or read more about our seamless eavestrough installation in London.
